DECLARATIONS of Independence, Summer 2017 9 Independence wasn’t always known as Independence. In fact, most reports state the City was originally named Crewitts Creek on November 20, 1837. It was also known as Crews Creek and Bagby before it was officially named Independence after Campbell County split and created Kenton County in 1840.The town was so named because of the newfound independence that locals gained from the split from Campbell County. In 1842 – 175 years ago – the City was incorporated and initially encompassed the block surrounding the Kenton County Courthouse. Today, Independence residents Eric Diamon and Kristie Poe are honoring those humble beginnings with the newest eatery in town – Crewitts Creek. Diamon said the restaurant, which occupies the old El Rio Grande space at 2037 Centennial Blvd., will be a place for everyone to call “home” and will be unlike anything the city has to offer now.
