The KDVA opened on May 1 in the City Building and will be a resource for area veterans who need help with their benefits. The City provided the space for the brand new branch in an effort to assist more veterans in Northern Kentucky with the free services provided by the KDVA. In addition to benefits counseling, the KDVA acts as an advocate for veterans and their families by offering information or help with education, health care, interment, skilled long-term care, employment, and special programs for women veterans and homeless veterans. Shoot Some Hoops!! THANKYOU to Independence resident John Vince for donating four portable basketball goals for the court at Memorial Park until permanent goals are installed. WolsingWoodsWetland Land near the Cody Road Bridge will soon become a dedicated wetland to help manage water quality and quantity within Banklick Creek. The project will be on the Wolsing Woods site, land that was given by George Wolsing and his family to the Kenton Conservancy to be protected and to create walking trails for future generations to enjoy. The project, which is expected to begin this November and likely be completed by the summer of 2019, is the result of a collaborative effort between the Banklick Watershed Council and the Kenton Conservancy to reduce severe bank erosion along Banklick Creek. An EPA Clean Water Act grant provided by the Kentucky Division of Water will create a wetland for excess stormwater flows in Banklick Creek to overflow into. Although the wetland will not prevent flooding of the roadway, it will reduce harmful erosion.Wetland construction will also include the installation of wetland plants and trees and will establish a trail system that connects the wetland to Wolsing Trails. 5409 Madison Pike • Independence, KY 41051 (859) 356-5302 • www.cityofindependence.org Mayor Chris Reinersman – mayor@cityofindependence.org City Council Bill Aseere – baseere@cityofindependence.org John Deaton – jdeaton@cityofindependence.org Amy Engelman – aengelman@cityofindependence.org Carol Franzen – cfranzen@cityofindependence.org Patricia Taney – phtaney@cityofindependence.org Greg Waite – gwaite@cityofindependence.org City Administrator Chris Moriconi – cmoriconi@cityofindependence.org City Clerk Gina Gabbard – ggabbard@cityofindependence.org Independence Police Department Chief Tony Lucas – (859) 356-2697 PublicWorks Director Dan Koch – (859) 363-2949 Parks and Recreation Director Nita Brake – (859) 363-2934 Building Department Building Inspector Mike Carpenter – (859) 363-2947 Zoning Department Zoning Administrator Megan Bessey – (859) 363-2948 The City of Independence DECLARATIONS of Independence, Summer 2017 3 Det.
