The City of Independence Parks and Recreation department is responsible for the creation and maintenance of city parks, the regulation of their use and the coordination of special events within the city.

The Recreation department also oversees and coordinates activities associated with the Senior Center.

In order to ensure the appropriate use and scheduling of City facilities a permit system has been created. To reserve park shelters or ball fields the responsible party is required to submit a completed permit request. If an individual or group wishes to schedule a special event an application is required.
