Independence Police Department
Honor Guard
The Police Honor Guard is a ceremonial unit, composed of volunteers from a policy agency. The volunteers are highly motivated individuals who maintain exceptionally high standards of appearance and conduct and show aptitude for ceremonial duty. The primary role for an honor guard is to provide funeral honors for fallen comrades, department employees, and department family members. An honor guard team will also serve as 'Guardian of the Colors' by displaying and escorting the national flag during ceremonial occasions.
The Independence Police Honor Guard currently has five active members. These members are trained in protocol and upkeep of equipment and uniform. Captain John Lonaker, Lieutenant Mike Thatcher, Lieutenant Scott Schultz, Police Officer Todd Bennett, and Police Officer Russ Wood are called to duty by the Chief for parades and ceremonial events. These officers take pride in their duties to serve when necessary.
