Independence Police Department

An Accredited Agency

The Independence Police Department became an accredited agency in April of 1999.  The department has been reaccredited in 2004 and in 2009.  Chief Shawn Butler has been the Accreditation Manager for each process.  He worked with members of the department to ensure compliance with accreditation standards.  The department will be up for reaccreditation in 2014. 

To become accredited the Independence Police Department completed the self-assessment phase of accreditation.  During this phase we examined all aspects of our policies, procedures, and operation. We measured our previous standards against the accepted standards of accreditation and made adjustments as necessary. Once the self assessment was completed an Independent Assessment Team conducted an onsite assessment. The Assessment Team ensured that the agency was in compliance with accreditation standards. All findings were then presented to the KACP Executive Board. The Board reviewed their findings with Chief Butler stating that his agency had met the Accreditation Standards. A formal Award of Accreditation was presented. 

Members of the Independence Police Department are proud of their hard work towards Accreditation. Only 15% of all police agencies in the Commonwealth of Kentucky have been awarded such a prestigious honor. The citizens of Independence are well served by having an Accredited Police Agency.
