MAYOR continued It has been an exciting time for new businesses in the city as well. With 800 likes and 176 shares of the announcement on the citys Facebook page Im guessing Im not the only one who was thrilled to the see the Kroger Fuel Center open at the Towne Center. A few days earlier I had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon for the grand opening of the Dollar Tree across the street. By the time this newsletter reaches you we should be on the verge of the Aldi grocery store opening next door. The east side of town is abuzz with activity as well with a new Dominos Pizza and Yolos Pizza Buffet and Frozen Treats Cafe in the old library building near Cherokee Plaza. Im excited to have more services here in Independencebut one of my biggest goals is to attract employers. Weve been working diligently for the past several months to have Independence selected for the new Northern Kentucky Independent District Health Department headquarters. The site off Turkeyfoot Road near Industrial Road will be the administrative office rather than a health clinic. They will have approximately 80 employees with an average annual salary in the 50000 range. This revenue boost will relieve some of the future tax burden from residents. The addition of 80 employees to the neighborhood will help stimulate development of the vacant 30-acre site across from Remkes and bring some much needed choices to the west side of town also. Weve made the final cut with the field narrowed down to one site in Florence and our site. Fingers crossed that we are selected In closing Id like to wish everyone a safe productive and fun-filled spring and summer. See you at the circus Best Regards Mayor Chris Reinersman DECLARATIONS of Independence Spring 2016 2 If your only visit to the Independence SeniorCitizenandCommunityCenterhas been during the Christmas Walk or the Independence Celebration then youre missing out.The Senior Center offers so much more and now is the perfect time to see whats happening With a host of regular and NEW programming theres something for everyone. ZONING NEWS Is a building permit required to replace my furnace or air conditioner Yes A common misconception when replacing or installing a new HVAC system is that a permit isnt necessary. Thats not the case says Building Inspector Mike Carpenter. Often homeowners are unaware of the requirement or assume their contractor has everything in order. According to Carpenter while many HVAC professionals comply with these regulations some do not. Its something the contractor is supposed to do and they just dont because its an extra cost for them Carpenter said. Its a minimal cost however to safeguard city residentsa top priority for city officials. For the 105 state-mandated fee Carpenter ensures the service provider is a licensed master HVAC contractor has liability insurance abides by all codes and Carpenter will perform a full inspection. Homeowners should check to make sure their contractor has followed all regulations and obtained the required permit. Without a permit homeowners may face citations and may not get quality work. If an HVAC system is not installed properly severe property damage bodily injury or death may occur. HVAC is not just simple furnace or air conditioner installation Carpenter said. It demands serious consideration and planning. Carpenter noted HVAC repairs do NOT require a permit.Additionally capable homeowners may install or replace their own HVAC system on an owner-occupied property if a permit is obtained all codes are followed. Permit applications are available at the City Building and are on the citys website. Questions Contact Building Inspector Mike Carpenter at 859 363-2947. LOCAL SPOTLIGHT Dale Robbins knows what its like to struggle with obesity. He was a husky child who grew into an overweight adult. He was self- conscious and embarrassed. At age 27 he was tipping the scales at 301 pounds and decided things had to change. Little by little he worked on his weight and improved his eating habits setting small goals for himself along the way. Now the retired police officer is in top physical condition due to hard work and a complete lifestyle change and hes following a dream to help young people achieve and maintain good habits for a healthy life. Robbins and his wife Pam opened 4A Youth Fitness Center in the Cherokee Shopping Plaza in Independence last summer offering group circuit training one-on-one sessions and a multitude of classes designed to improve speed agility strength and endurance for children of all ages and skill levels. As Certified Youth Physical Trainers they instruct both beginners and seasoned athletes on practicing good nutrition and physical fitness in a fun positive atmosphere. But most of all they want to empower youth to feel better about themselves. Im not worried about these kids being bodybuilders Dale said. Its about self-esteem and self-confidence because I didnt have that as a kid. Pam said its amazing to watch the progression of their clients. Shes seen a marked difference in attitudes and overall physical health and has seen a number of children manage and prevent serious medical challenges theyve been faced with. Due to high demand adult classes have been added. Operating hours and class schedule will expand in the summertime. Visit their Facebook page or call 859 409-4801 for more information to schedule a free trial session or schedule training sessions for both individuals and sports teams. Interesting facts about our city Something funny happened in Independence back in the 1980s. Funny how Like a clown Kind of. If youve seen the 1990 blockbuster mob movie Goodfellas youre familiar with Henry Hill the gangster portrayed by Ray Liotta. But did you know the real Henry Hill actually lived in Independence in the 1980s Hill was a goodfella not so much of a good fellow. He led a life of crime which included the Boston College point shaving scandal of 1978-79 and the Lufthansa Heist in which a haul of 22 million in todays dollars was taken. He ultimately skated on charges which would have sent him to prison when he became an FBI informant. His testimony led to roughly 50 convictions. He and his family entered the witness protection program. One of his stops landed him in the Beechgrove area. It was obvious Hill or Martin Lewis as he was reportedly known didnt fit in. But the Brooklyn native didnt take long to find the horse racing tracka stones throw from our house as he reported in his 2002 cookbook yes cookbookcalled The Wiseguy Cookbook. He clearly thought placing a guy involved in the numbers racket next to a track was a poor decision. In the book he writes drop him next to a track tell him to behave and see what happens. Puh-leese Hill didnt have a penchant for staying still or keeping a low profile however. He started a horse-drawn trolley car company in Cincinnati which garnered him publicity. Then he began calling relatives back homea no-no in the witness protection program. After about a year he was moved. Hill died in 2012 but Independence will forever be a footnote in the life of one of the most notorious gangsters of our time.
