The City of Independence has contracted with Rumpke of Kentucky, Inc. to provide trash collection.

• Effective July 1, 2008 Rumpke will begin billing Independence residents directly for curbside trash pickup … and you will be billed on a quarterly basis.  You will no longer see a trash assessment on your annual city property tax bill.  The property tax bill is on a fiscal year – July 1 thru June 30 – not a calendar year, so all residential trash pickup was paid by the city through June 30, 2008.
• You will not be billed on the 2008 tax bill for trash assessment as you have been in past years.  The trash assessment on your 2007 tax bill was for the fiscal year period of July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008.  Rumpke’s direct billing of the residents was effective beginning July 1, 2008, and they will bill you quarterly from now on.   The trash assessment billing on your tax bill each year was always for the fiscal year – July 1 thru June 30 – not calendar year.

Rumpke trucks are in the city on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. If you are a new resident of Independence or have questions you may call the city office at (859) 356-5302 for information on what day trash is picked up on your street. If you do experience problems with your trash being collected please call the city office and Rumpke will be informed. Please do not contact Rumpke directly about weekly service.

Curbside recycling is available on an individual subscription basis for $3.86 per unit. You will need to contact Rumpke directly to receive a container. Rumpke will bill participating residents monthly for this service. Please allow 7-10 working days for the recycling bin to arrive.

If you do not want to subscribe to curbside recycling, you can take your recyclables to a bin located in the Banklick Woods Park at 420 Independence Station Road.
