Occupational License
The City of Independence requires all persons operating a business within the City limits to obtain an occupational license. The City collaborates with the Kenton County Occupational License Director’s office for the administration and collection of the City’s occupational license fees. Information about this license and fees can be obtained from the Kenton County website at www.kentoncounty.org. The license application can be obtained by clicking here
The City’s occupational license fees that are levied and imposed is at the following rates:
- Annual occupational license is $50.00
- 1.25% of all compensation earned by an employee for labor, work or services provided in the City
- For those not employees the rate is 0.075% of the taxable gross receipts of everybody, other than employees, who is engaged in any franchise, trade, occupation, profession or other business in the City.
If you are operating a business from your home, you must first apply for and obtain a Home Occupation Permit from the City Zoning Administrator, Annie Wuestefeld at anniew@cityofindependence.org or by calling 859-363-2948. After you have been approved for the Home Occupational License, then you would need to apply for the Occupational License with the Kenton County License Director’s office.
