Fourth of July
The 4th of July Celebration is the largest event during the summer in Independence. The festival runs on Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday nights you can expect to enjoy rides, music, food and a general festive atmosphere. On Saturday, the celebration starts with The Independence Business Association's Cars & Pipes Car Show in Kroger's parking lot. The car show is followed by a parade that runs from Summit View Middle School to Memorial Park. The festival is held at Memorial Park and begins with the arrival of the parade. Festivities include food, rides & games for children, and concludes with a spectacular fireworks show.
This year, check out the new expanded TEEN ZONE, a go-to hangout spot for all the cool kids in the crowd. Located on the paved lot and site of the soon-to-be-completed basketball court by the amphitheater, the Teen Zone will feature a 250-foot Zip Line where daredevils can catch a breeze as they take flight.
For those who are up to the challenge, give The Meltdown a shot! Can you jump high enough or duck quickly enough to avoid the inflatable's rotating arm designed to knock you off your podium? Compete against seven others and be the last one standing! Pay per ride or get a wristband for unlimited adventures.
"We're excited about this addition because we've always had rides and activities that are great for younger children and preteens, but this is an area we've been lacking," Mayor Reinersman said. "This will be spectacular for the older teens who are looking for something to do." Having these activities at the site of the future basketball court will alleviate any congestion at the festival caused by large crowds.
For those 21 and over, adult beverages will be available at the new Festival Beer Garden at the amphitheater. This will be the first time adults can enjoy a drink while listening to the live music on park grounds. The contained area will be roped off next to the stage. Alcohol will not be permitted outside of this area. Remember to drink responsibly and keep the Independence Celebration a fun, family event!
