Duke Energy began installing new digital smart meters this September in Independence.The smart meters allow residents to access more information about energy usage online, view energy usage in real time, and reduce the need for estimated billing.The elimination of manual meter reads also reduces the risk of human error. Duke Energy employees and contractors will carry a picture ID card. If the technician is unable to perform the installation at your home or business, he/she will leave a note indicating an appointment is needed.
